back and not as good as before – with one exception

I mostly have work to blame for my 10 month absence. I’ve been working a lot. To the point where I’m so out of shape that running two miles is a Herculean task. But it’s like Thom Yorke says :”you do it to yourself”.  So now I begin the task of undoing it to myself… and that’s what really hurts.

The above pic is one on my home studio. I took most of yesterday to acquaint myself with the wonders of GarageBand…wow, great stuff. The fruit of my first attempt:

Not Enough

Not a finished product, not fantastic, but kinda cool for a couple of hours of messing around.

taking the show on the road

I’ve been busy, but I’ve not stopped running. Technically, I start a new job today – but I’ll mostly just be flying and landing through various parts of Texas and Mississippi. The hotel that I’m staying off for the next two weeks has a treadmill, so I’ll have little excuse for not running. There’s also a beach (a possibly oil-covered beach) and many roads that my nikes and I can get acquainted with.

I’m in San Antonio right now, at the airport, and I’m waiting for my flight to board. I’m enjoying the free wifi, but my audiobook will likely not download before 8:45 (darn).

Back to the running though – the runs have been good lately. I think that I’m pretty much acclimated to the summer. I’ve had a couple of 6 and 5 mile runs in sunny 90 degree (and higher) weather. Gulfport probably isn’t going to be much cooler than south Texas has been.

More later, about to board.

Musical Highlight of latest run:

step two, day two & two step

Long time no post, I know. Lots going on.

I began this year by running a lot and running often – nearly 200 miles so far. Now, I’m switching gears and running less often (about 3 times per week), but I’m going to run longer distances. I’m on day two of an actual half marathon training program and everything’s working well so far. The training program should last three months, but the half marathon that I’m signed up to run doesn’t happen for another 6 months. I plan to repeat the training program (albeit a more rigorous version of the same program) for the second three month period.

So I’m only running three days out of the week – Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. I plan to rest on Sundays and use a crappy (but effective) elliptical the other three days. I’ve been using the elliptical for the last week and a half and it gives me a great workout with little to no strain on my joints. I think that it’s making my runs better, but I’m only on day two – so what the hell do I know?

musical highlight of the run:

commitment not discipline

I’ve run 12 out of the last 14 days. I came up with a new plan. I even came up with a marketing angle on the whole thing. My idea: 2 miles times 5, no excuses. It’s that simple.

Why? Because I had gotten out of the habit of running and because I was injuring myself by attempting to do too much too soon. I was doing it backwards. The plan now is to run 2 miles at least 5 times per week for a month. The second month then becomes: 3 miles times 4, no excuses. I’ll be running fewer days, but increasing the mileage. I’m not sure what I’m doing on the third month, but I’m leaning toward 4 miles times 4 or three miles times 5. I figure that after three months I’ll be:

  1. very much in the habit of running again
  2. in pretty decent shape (endurance-wise)

and at that point I’ll be ready to pursue some more advanced distance training program.

Many of the last two weeks’ miles have been run to the White Stripes’ new live album – I wholeheartedly recommend it:

musical highlight of the last run:

let me be the first to wish you a Happy New Year on behalf of Tyler Perry

I am, aren’t I? Are you seriously going to sit there and tell me that someone else has wished you a happy New Year on behalf of Tyler Perry?

Didn’t think so.

I’m up to my clavicle in sports. The Red Raiders won an exciting game under some strange circumstances. The Spurs are shaping up and might yet make some noise before it’s all said and done. For all the doom and gloom from the fanbase, they’re somehow in third place in the conference and second in the division.

The running is going well. I finished out the year by running 56.21 miles in October, 69.33 in November and 63.87 in December. For the year, I ran 421 miles. That was less than the previous year, but I finished strong and plan to be more consistant this year. We (me and the mouse in my pocket) are shooting for at least 600 miles this year. That means that I have to run at least 50 miles per month and that’s fine with me – honestly (and secretly) I’d like to run at least 65 miles per month. That would be more like in the neighborhood of 800 miles for the year. But whatever – I, like The Dude, abide.

The musical highlight of today’s run (will be):

regarding your request for comment

On the matter of Manu Ginoboli swatting a bat:

First of all, what are you or your firewall doing in Atlanta?

Second, the bat survived.

(As you must already know) I think that it was insanely cool. It was made less cool by the fact that Manu now has to assume that he might have rabies and as such must undergo the required treatment. The bat was asking for it much in the same way that drunken dudes are asking for it when they go on a football field during play.

As to PETA’s objections:

I’m not for clubbing babies that walk onto the court (some have made the argument that beating a child and bat are equivalent). I’m not even for clubbing baby seals that hang out on beaches. I’m a realist though and sometimes animals – especially the sort that can harm people – need to be restrained and removed. Sometimes that involves killing/hurting an animal and that’s a shame, but it’s just the way it is.

A basketball game isn’t more important than the life of a bat, but the lives of the fans and players are.

What if the bat had been rabid and what if it had bitten and infected a child sitting courtside? Would PETA have issued a press release about how the 4 ounce bat was well within it’s rights as a sentient being?  Would PETA have criticized the bat for attacking a more defenseless being?

No, they wouldn’t because it’s just a stupid bat.

On to other matters, the running is going well but the conditioning is hard to come by. Sometimes I feel great and sometimes I don’t. Either way, I am doing a better job of sticking to a routine and I’m sure that it’ll pay dividends at some point.

Bonus musical highlight (if you ever get a chance to catch this guy live, do it. In a word: Compelling):

Movie Tip: If you like or think you might hate either Jack Nicholson or Randy Quaid, watch 1973′s The last detail. I think that it’ll confirm your suspicions or completely change your mind. Either way, you’ll be entertained for 103 minutes.

feeling pretty good

It’s been 20 miles since my feet hurt. Feel pretty good, just busy. Will hopefully write something of substance (sure I will) soon.

friday

Today was supposed to be a day off, but I slacked on Tuesday and so here I am. Ran two miles and it wasn’t so hard except for my calves. They started burning at about half a mile and kept right on for the rest of the way. I need to hydrate better I think. There was a punkish band at the lake. Don’t know who they are or where they came from. Trying to sound like pavement only they’ve never heard pavement… or maybe they have. Good for them either way, I’m way into live music and free entertainment. They weren’t bad.

Had a chance encounter with a childhood friend and we caught up for about 40 minutes before my run. It was a good run.

Musical highlight of the day’s run:

a beginning

Not “The Beginning”, but here we go. And there should be more context to this, but there isn’t.

I get my new iPod by the end of the week and I’m supposed to get my nike+ sensor thingy tomorrow – my birthday present to myself.

I tell you all that to tell you that you’ll have to take my word for it when I tell you that I ran 1.5 miles today. It’s not impressive, but it’s a start. I plan to do that again four more times this week and then increase the mileage every week for the next seven months. On February 14, 2010 I plan to do this.

So there it is. I can’t do it right now, but luckily I don’t have to. I can run a mile and a half very easily, in a week it’ll be two, in five weeks it’ll be 6 and so on. There are hundreds of miles and seven months between me and 02/14/2010, I’ll let you know how it goes.
